Japanese characters in Group emails are garbled or missing when formatted as Plain Text

Last Updated: February 19, 2020

When sending Office 365 Group emails in Plain Text with Hiragana letters (Japanese Characters), the resulting emails may have missing or garbled characters.

The email body may show properly in the list view, but it will show blank or garbled in the Reading Pane.

The Outlook Team is investigating the issue for a future fix. To work around this issue, choose one of the following options:

  • Use HTML formatted emails in Groups

  • Disable Beta: Use Unicode UTF-8 for worldwide language support in Windows

    • Open Settings> Time and Language> Language> Select Administrative language settings> Change system locale> Uncheck the box 'Beta: Use Unicode UTF-8 for worldwide language support'> OK> Restart Computer
