When you try to view a Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Reporting Services (SSRS 2012) or SQL Server 2014 Reporting Services (SSRS 2014) report on a Microsoft SharePoint website, you may receive the following error message:

Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.InvalidDataSetReferenceException: The report server cannot process the report. The reference for the shared dataset 'DataSet' is not valid.

In this situation, you find that the DataSets and DataSources collection information for this report has been removed from the SSRS Report Server catalog database. However, the collection information is not deleted.

Additionally, the following error message will be logged in the SharePoint log:

<Date><Time> w3wp.exe (0x2D54) 0x2C5C SQL Server Reporting Services Report Server Catalog 0000 High Catalog item /… /MyReport.rdl was not found in the SharePoint site. It will be deleted from the Catalog.

Note This issue occurs when there are some connection issues with the SharePoint content database.

This issue occurs because the reports are treated as invalid reports when the SharePoint configuration databases are online and can be connected to while the content database has connectivity issues.
