Consider the following scenario:
You run a Transact-SQL statement that starts an update of out-of-date statistics.
You run another Transact-SQL statement in parallel that acquires a schema (SCH-M) lock, for example, the ALTER PARTITION SCHEME statement.
In this scenario, a three-way deadlock may occur. The deadlock is among the ALTER PARTITION SCHEME, the select statement, and the statistics being updated.
