Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You run a Transact-SQL statement that starts an update of out-of-date statistics.

  • You run another Transact-SQL statement in parallel that acquires a schema (SCH-M) lock, for example, the ALTER PARTITION SCHEME statement.

In this scenario, a three-way deadlock may occur. The deadlock is among the ALTER PARTITION SCHEME, the select statement, and the statistics being updated.

Resolution

The issue was first fixed in the following cumulative update of SQL Server:

Each new cumulative update for SQL Server contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous cumulative update. We recommend that you download and install the latest cumulative updates for SQL Server:
