Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You use Microsoft SQL Server 2016 Service Pack 2 Cumulative Update 6.

  • The new OLE DB provider (MSOLEDBSQL) is used.

  • You run a remote ad hoc query by using the OPENDATASOURCE function to connect to remote data from OLE DB data sources.

  • The query contains an error, for example, a reference to non-existing table.

In this scenario, you notice that an incorrect error message is displayed when the query fails.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

Resolution

This issue is fixed in the following cumulative update for SQL Server:
