Microsoft announced the public preview release of Microsoft 365 LTI. This new tool brings Microsoft 365 Education capabilities for learning management systems together into single tool, providing a streamlined experience for educators and learners. This support article will be kept up to date with the latest answers for frequently asked questions regarding Microsoft 365 LTI.

General Questions

How does Microsoft 365 LTI relate to other LTI tools from Microsoft Education?

The new Microsoft 365 LTI app combines and improves upon the capabilities of multiple individual tools into one convenient tool. Instead of managing multiple LTI integrations, you’ll have one unified solution that is more functional and easier to deploy and maintain. Educators and learners will benefit from a more seamless and up-to-date LMS experience for Microsoft 365 Education. This consolidation also allows us to deliver improvements and new features more rapidly. The LTI tools superseded by Microsoft 365 LTI include:

  • Teams Classes LTI

  • Teams Meetings LTI

  • Teams Assignments LTI

  • OneDrive LTI

  • OneNote Class Notebook LTI

  • Reflect LTI

What does this mean for the superseded LTI tools?

Microsoft previously announced Teams Classes LTI and Teams Meetings LTI will reach end of life on September 15, 2025. While the remaining tools continue to be supported with their current functionality, enhancements and new features will be delivered only in Microsoft 365 LTI.

Can LMS administrators enable/disable the different Microsoft applications within the Microsoft 365 LTI tool?

Yes, LMS administrators can control the availability of features such as Teams, OneNote, Reflect, etc., LMS-wide. Additionally, instructors can further configure the visibility of available features within each of their courses.

Does this new Microsoft 365 LTI integration support multi-tenant environments?

Yes, the tool can be used in certain multi-tenant environments. For example, when multiple schools with their own M365 tenants share an LMS deployment.

Important considerations:

  • When the user logs into the Microsoft 365 LTI tool, the tool connects to the M365 tenant based on the user’s login domain.

  • Teachers and students in the same course must be in the same M365 tenant.

  • The LTI tool doesn't support Entra B2B guest users.

  • Generally, there will need to be a 1:1 mapping of LMS user accounts to M365 user accounts, so that identities are properly matched between the two systems. This means that if an LMS user is enrolled in two schools with two different M365 tenants, then that user will need two separate LMS accounts.

  • Blackboard, Canvas, D2L, and Moodle all have native (or add-on) capabilities to create teams for courses and keep rosters in sync. Generally, these only support a single M365 tenant for the LMS. Instead of these built-in features, you can use the new team creation and synchronization features built into the M365 LTI tool, which will work in multi-tenant environments.

If we are using Microsoft OneDrive LTI, should we uninstall the old tool before installing Microsoft 365 LTI?

These two tools can co-exist. When installing Microsoft 365 LTI, you should keep the older OneDrive LTI installed to service any existing deep links. In a future release, we will provide a way to enable Microsoft 365 LTI to handle these links.

If we install the Microsoft 365 LTI tool in our LMS, will our M365 admin get a message asking to consent to the permissions required by the tool?

Your M365 admin will not be notified automatically. The LTI tool does provide a link that you can send to your M365 admin for consent. Since this tool is a component of M365, the need for admin consent will be removed in a future release.

What if our Microsoft team doesn't agree to consent to all the permissions required by this preview tool? Can still test with partial permissions?

Many of the application permissions are required for provisioning and initialization of the tool within a course. It’s possible for missing permissions to stop your use of the tool entirely. Since this tool is a component of Microsoft 365, the need for admin consent will be removed in a future release.

Will meetings scheduled through Microsoft 365 LTI automatically be added to my LMS’s calendar?

Microsoft 365 LTI does not synchronize meeting schedules with the calendars in any LMS. Scheduled meetings are shown in the Microsoft 365 LTI tool. Microsoft 365 users who are invited to meetings can also see their meetings in Teams and Outlook.

Will grades from Microsoft 356 LTI assignments sync with my LMS gradebook?

Yes. The Microsoft 365 LTI tool uses the LTI Assignments and Grades service to sync grades to the LMS gradebook.

How long are Microsoft 365 LTI assignments available for review once a course ends?

The assignments will be available as long as the underlying Microsoft 365 group site for the course is available. Lifecycle management of Microsoft 365 teams, groups, and storage, including archiving and deletion, is controlled by your Microsoft 365 administrators. Usually, this is independent of the lifecycle management of courses in the LMS. One exception is Blackboard, which may automatically archive teams that it created with its native synchronization.

Does the Microsoft 365 LTI tool use count against our storage limits?

The Microsoft 365 LTI tool stores course content, assignments, class notebooks, etc. in a group site for each course. This stored content will count against the tenant’s pooled storage.

Why does the sign-in splash screen seem to appear every time I access the Microsoft 365 LTI tool even though I am signed in?

This can happen if third-party cookies are not enabled in the browser. This is a current limitation of the Microsoft Entra login when apps are launched in an iframe. We are exploring possible solutions for this behavior. In the meantime, enabling third-party cookies will work around the issue.

Do we have documentation for both instructors and students?

This documentation is still under development.

If we are using the Teams Classes and/or Teams Meetings LTIs, should we uninstall the old tools before installing Microsoft 365 LTI?

The Teams Classes and Teams Meetings LTI tools will cease to function after September 15, 2025. While you do not need to remove them before installing Microsoft 365 LTI, we do recommend that you remove them before beginning your next academic term. Microsoft 365 LTI is backward compatible with the previous tools. Existing teams and meetings from the old tools will appear in Microsoft 365 LTI. No data migration is needed.

Is there any way you can see who is currently using the Teams Classes and Meetings integrations? It would be helpful in our communication plan for when we migrate to the new integration because of the EOL.

It is possible to identify the owners (instructors) of the teams that are linked to LMS courses. The link is associated with a team’s Microsoft 365 group. You can find an example here of how to list these groups here: O365-EDU-Tools/LTI Scripts/IdentifyingClassTeams.md at master · OfficeDev/O365-EDU-Tools · GitHub

Then, for each of the groups listed, you’ll need to retrieve the list of owners: List group owners - Microsoft Graph v1.0 | Microsoft Learn

This will need to be done in collaboration with your M365 admin, as it requires permission to read all groups in the tenant.

Is there an estimated timeline for Microsoft 365 LTI to provide access to recordings for Teams meetings?

This feature is currently expected to be added in September 2025.

For meetings, what happens with guest access for users who are not enrolled in the course?

Microsoft 365 users who are not enrolled in a course can be invited to meetings. Meeting links can also be shared with external users. However, Microsoft 365 admins may prevent anonymous users from joining meetings and control other meetings behaviors with Teams policies.

How do we avoid duplicate team creation?

Blackboard, Canvas, D2L, and Moodle all have native (or add-on) capabilities to create teams for courses and keep rosters in sync in the background. To support additional LMSs, the new Microsoft 365 LTI added its own ability to create and sync teams when the tool is launched. (This is the “Teachers can create teams” option in the admin settings of Microsoft 365 LTI.)  To avoid the creation of duplicate teams, you should only enable one sync method in your LMS. Generally, we recommend that you use the native sync built into your LMS for the best experience.

If we need assistance or have questions about this update, who should we contact?

You can contact Microsoft Education Support through https://aka.ms/EduSupport.

Additionally, you can attend Join Microsoft’s LTI Office Hours the1st and 3rd Thursday of each month, 11am EST @ https://aka.ms/LTIOfficeHours.

LMS-specific Questions

Can the Microsoft 365 LTI tool create teams for each section of a course in Canvas?

Currently, the Microsoft Teams sync built into Canvas and the team creation capabilities built into Microsoft 365 LTI will only create a single team for a course. Neither will create teams for each section in a course.

If we are using Teams Assignments LTI in Blackboard, should we uninstall the old tool before installing Microsoft 365 LTI?

Unfortunately, the Teams Assignments LTI must be uninstalled before installing Microsoft 365 LTI for Blackboard. These two tools use a common domain, which means that the tools cannot be installed simultaneously due to a uniqueness constraint in Blackboard. Note that existing Teams Assignments LTI deep links will be broken if the tool is uninstalled. However, those assignments will continue to be accessible directly in Microsoft Teams.

In Blackboard, we are not seeing the "Microsoft Education" link under Details & Actions even though the Microsoft 365 LTI too is installed. Why?

To enable this menu item, please follow the instructions to enable Teams integration: Use Microsoft Teams with Blackboard Learn Ultra | Microsoft Learn
