This article describes update 4011140 for Microsoft Word 2016 that was released on October 3, 2017. This update has a prerequisite. Be aware that the update on the Microsoft Download Center applies to the Microsoft Installer (.msi)-based edition of Office 2016. It doesn't apply to the Office 2016 Click-to-Run editions, such as Microsoft Office 365 Home. (How to determine?)

Improvements and fixes

This update fixes the following issues:

  • After you save a Word file that contains tables in vertical textbox to a PDF file, some or all of the table borders are missing in the PDF file.

  • In Outlook 2016, the bottoms of some characters (descenders) might be clipped with certain fonts at certain zoom factors.

  • After you enable Information Rights Management (IRM) for a SharePoint document library that uses required custom columns, you cannot create new documents in this library from the templates and receive the following error message:

The file is uploaded as checked out.

When you try to check in the files, you receive the following error message:

We can't do that for you because the file is no longer checked out or has been deleted.

  • Outlook 2016 crashes randomly when you print a file by using certain third-party printers.

  • When you open some PDF files that have certain image encoding in Word 2016, the images may be displayed black.

  • Merged table cells are broken after you install August 8, 2017, update for Word 2016 (KB3213656) or the September 5, 2017, update for Word 2016 (KB4011039).
