This article describes update 4464531 for Microsoft Office 2016 that was released on September 3, 2019.

Be aware that the update in the Microsoft Download Center applies to the Microsoft Installer (.msi)-based edition of Office 2016. It doesn't apply to the Office 2016 Click-to-Run editions, such as Microsoft Office 365 Home (see What version of Office am I using?).

Improvements and fixes

This update contains the following improvements:

  • Allows users to enable metafile subrect optimization for Office 2016. This fixes an issue in which large Enhanced Metafiles (.emf files) pasted in Office files become blurry.

To enable metafile subrect optimization, add the EnableMetafileSubRectOptimization registry key in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Gfx location and set it to be a nonzero value.

  • Prevents caching many small Enhanced Metafiles (.emf files) in Excel workbooks in memory. This avoids that the number of GDI object reaches the limit of windows GDI Object handles per process.
