Files come in all different types - documents, pictures, spreadsheets, apps and many more. The system knows what kind of file it is by the file extension; usually a 3 or 4-letter code appended to the end of the file name after a dot.
You've probably seen these file extensions many times. For example, "Chemistry paper.docx" has a "DOCX" extension, which means it's a Microsoft Word document. "Birthday.jpg" is a "JPG" file, a picture.
Some file extensions, such as .JS or .COM, indicate files that are scripts or executable code. Those are the apps we use and enjoy every day, but they can also be malware.
