Symptoms

You install Microsoft SQL Server 2012 on a computer that is running Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1), or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. When Setup calls the NetQueryServiceAccount function to check whether the account that is being used for Setup is a managed service account, Setup stops responding indefinitely.

Cause

This problem occurs because the NetQueryServiceAccount function tries to make an LDAP bind to each domain controller in the forest as it is chasing a referral.

Resolution

To resolve this issue in Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2, install update 2919355.
To resolve this issue in Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2, install the hotfix that is described in this article.
