Teams Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI®) sunset FAQ

What is the purpose of the changes to Microsoft Teams LTI tools?  

The changes aim to streamline the LTI experiences for education customers using different LMS systems by consolidating the capabilities of multiple LTI tools into fewer, more functional tools. This will simplify the deployment experience for administrators and provide educators and learners with more efficient access to Microsoft 365 capabilities in their LMS courses. 

Which LTI tools are being replaced or updated? 

The Teams Classes LTI and Teams Meetings LTI tools are being replaced as part of this consolidation.

When will the changes take effect? 

New deployments of the Teams Classes and Meetings LTI tools are no longer supported in the Microsoft LTI Registration Portal with immediate effect. Existing deployments will cease to function on September 15, 2025.

How will this affect my organization if we are not using Teams LTIs?

If you are not currently using Teams LTIs (Class Team and Meetings), there will be no impact on your organization.

What should educational organizations currently using Teams LTIs do? 

Educational institutions using Teams Classes or Meetings LTI tools will need to migrate to the new experience when it becomes available. A preview release of the new unified experience is currently expected in July 2025 to expedite deployment, testing and training.  Redeployment will not be required upon general availability.

Will there be any migration details provided?

Yes, migration details will be forthcoming to assist with the transition to the new unified experience. The new experience will be backward compatible with the previous tools and existing LMS course to Teams synchronization features.

Why is Microsoft making these changes?

Microsoft is making these changes to simplify onboarding and usage for education customers by consolidating multiple LTI tools into fewer, more functional tools.

What will happen to the capabilities of the Class Teams LTI and Meetings LTI tools?

The capabilities of the Class Teams LTI and Meetings LTI tools will be superseded by a new, unified experience.

Will any Teams already created or syncing via the Canvas Team Sync, Blackboard Team Sync, D2L / Brightspace Course Connector for Class Teams or School Data Sync be disrupted?  

No, any existing Team including those continuing to sync via an LMS integration will not be disrupted by this change.  The link directly to any Team or channel can still be shared with Team members to provide direct and easy access to any existing Class Team.

Will this effect Meetings created via the Teams Meetings LTI?

No, any meeting created via the Teams Meetings LTI will remain on calendars or as an active channel meeting based on its schedule and recurrence.  A direct link to Join the meeting can still be shared with students.
