Applies ToWindows 8 Windows 8 Enterprise Windows 8 Pro

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a Tablet PC that is running Windows 8.

  • You drain the tablet battery completely.

  • You connect the tablet to the charger.

In this scenario, the tablet may try to turn on and turn off on its own multiple times. This can cause Trusted Platform Module (TPM) anti-hammering logic to lock the TPM. Additionally, the tablet goes into Bitlocker lockout state, and after you enter the recovery key, the Bitlocker drive cannot be unlocked.

Cause

This issue occurs because after you drain the battery, you connect the tablet to the charger, and then the tablet automatically powers on and begins to startup. When the operating system starts, it determines that the battery is too low to run and shuts down. The tablet continues to cycle in this manner until it hits the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) lockout. This leads to Bitlocker recovery mode.

Resolution

After you apply this hotfix, you have to clear the TPM for the update to be in effect.

  • The files that apply to a specific product, milestone (RTM, SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table:

    Version

    Product

    Milestone

    Service branch

    6.2.920 0.20 xxx

    Windows 8

    RTM

    LDR

  • GDR service branches contain only those fixes that are widely released to address widespread, critical issues. LDR service branches contain hotfixes in addition to widely released fixes.

  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows 8" section. MUM, MANIFEST, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are very important to maintain the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
