INTRODUCTION

This article discusses how to troubleshoot performance issues in Microsoft Dynamics SL 7.0 and later versions.

More Information

General slowness during log on or opening screens

  • The TCP/IP offload engine (TOE) is turned on in Windows Server 2003.

For more information about TOE, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  • If you run Windows Server 2003, apply the update to disable several Scalable Networking Pack features which can cause connection/performance issues.

For more information about how to disable these features, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

948496 An update to turn off default SNP features is available for Windows Server 2003-based and Small Business Server 2003-based computers

  • If the computer(s) that are running Microsoft Dynamics SL do not have a connection to the Internet, or have a slow or unreliable connection, the "Check for certificate revocation" setting in Internet Explorer can cause a 5-10 second delay opening most screens.

For more information about how to turn off this feature, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  • Installing the Microsoft Dynamics SL program files on the client computer can improve performance.

For more information about why this may work, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  • If you use Terminal Server and the "Delete Temporary Folders On Exit" setting is set to YES, then every time that a user logs on to Microsoft Dynamics SL, the menu will be regenerated causing a noticeable delay during log on.

For more information about how to turn this feature off, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  • If you notice a 5-10 second delay when you open customized screens after you move Microsoft Dynamics SL to a new server and disconnect the old server, there may be some stray registry entries left on the client computer that still reference the old server name. The slowness occurs as Microsoft Dynamics SL tries to contact the old server and times out.

  • A bad printer device or slow connection to a printer can slow down the start of Microsoft Dynamics SL. To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

    1. Log on to Microsoft Dynamics SL.

    2. On the Application menu, click Printer Setup.

    3. Verify that the printer that is listed in the Printer Setup (98.220.00) screen is a valid printer, and then click OK.

  • Named Pipes and TCP/IP should be enabled on the workstation computers and the computer that is running Microsoft SQL Server, with Named Pipes being listed first. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. On the workstation computers:

      1. Click Start, click Run, type cliconfg, and then press OK.

      2. Make sure that both "Named Pipes" and "TCP/IP" show in the Enabled Protocols area.

      3. Make sure that the "Named Pipes" protocol is listed first.

      4. Click OK.

    2. On the computer that is running Microsoft SQL Server:

      1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server, point to Configuration Tools, and then click SQL Server Configuration Manager.

      2. Expand SQL Native Client Configuration, and then click Client Protocols.

      3. Make sure that both "Named Pipes" and "TCP/IP" have the Enabled column set to "Enabled."

      4. Make sure that the "Named Pipes" protocol has an Order value of 1.

      5. Make sure that the "TCP/IP" protocol has an Order value of 2.

Slowness during specific processing or report running

  • If the slowness is somewhat consistent, run a SQL Profiler Trace to help narrow which statements are causing the long duration.

For more information about how to run a SQL Profiler Trace, click the following article numbers to view the articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  • If you can pinpoint the slowness to a specific database table or group of tables, re-indexing the tables may help. To do this, you can run the "Master Indexes, Views, and Stored Procedures" scenario in the Database Maintenance (98.290.00) screen.

  • If you notice slow performance when you leave the Company ID box in several screens, it may be because of the screen validating user permissions.

945132 You experience poor performance when you leave the Company ID box in various screens in Microsoft Dynamics SL 7.0

  • If you experience the slow performance when you print invoices in Flexible Billings, it may be because of Business Objects Crystal Reports trying to reload the sub reports.
