Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a server that has the Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 Mailbox server role installed.

  • You install Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1) on the server.

  • You run the Remove-MailboxDatabaseCopy cmdlet to remove a mailbox database copy from a database on the server.

In this scenario, you receive the following warning message:

WARNING: An unexpected error has occurred and a Watson dump is being generated: Registry key has subkeys and recursive removes are not supported by this method.Registry key has subkeys and recursive removes are not supported by this method.+ CategoryInfo : NotSpecified: (:) [Remove-MailboxDatabaseCopy], InvalidOperationException+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : System.InvalidOperationException,Microsoft.Exchange.Management.SystemConfigurationTasks.RemoveMailboxDatabaseCopy

Notes

  • Despite the warning message, the mailbox database copy is removed successfully.

  • You can run the Get-MailboxDatabaseCopyStatus cmdlet to view the status information about the mailbox database.

  • After this issue occurs, you receive the same warning message if you run the Add-MailboxDatabaseCopy cmdlet to add the same mailbox database copy back to the database on the server.

Cause

This issue occurs because the following registry key is not cleared when you install Exchange Server 2010 SP1 on the server:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ExchangeServer\v14\Replay\State\<database GUID>\DumpsterInfo

Resolution

To resolve this issue, install the following update rollup:

2529939 Description of Update Rollup 3 for Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 1

Workaround

To work around this issue, manually delete the following registry key on the server:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ExchangeServer\v14\Replay\State\<database GUID>\DumpsterInfo

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
