If the server that is running Microsoft Exchange Server 2016 is running on hardware that's earlier than the Intel XEON Processor 5500 series, the Noderunner.exe process crashes.

Additionally, when this problem occurs, you may experience one or more of the following issues:

  • Only the IndexNode1 node crashes.

  • The Procdump command prompt utility cannot collect a dump file, and then it throws a 0xc000001d exception about an instruction.

  • When you run the Test-ExchangeSearch cmdlet on a database, it fails. When this occurs, the content index state of the database is either unknown or Failed.

  • An entry for Event ID 4999 that resembles the following is logged in Event Viewer every five minutes:

This problem occurs because Exchange uses the popcnt instruction that isn't supported on the hardware platform.

To fix this issue, install Cumulative Update 2 for Exchange Server 2016 or a later cumulative update for Exchange Server 2016.
