KB4551720 - FIX: Access violation exception occurs when promoting latches of frequently used database pages in SQL Server 2016 and 2017

Symptoms

Assume that you run Microsoft SQL Server 2016 or 2017 in a virtualization environment, such as VMWare, in which hot-add CPU and memory functionality are enabled. In this situation, you notice that the SQL Server process may terminate unexpectedly and generate an access violation exception in the error log. 

Cause

The exception occurs when SQL Server attempts to promote the latch to super latch for database pages that are frequently used.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

Resolution

This issue is fixed in the following cumulative updates for SQL Server:
