Summary
This security update resolves vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office that could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted Office file. To learn more about these vulnerabilities, see Microsoft Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures CVE-2017-0254Â and Microsoft Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures CVE-2017-0281. Note To apply this security update, you must have the release version of Word 2016 installed on the computer.
Improvements and fixes
This security update contains the following improvements:
-
Removes the requirement to enable "Use subpixel position to smooth fonts on screen" advanced option in order to correctly display equations on screen. Equations that are created in Equation 3.0 or MathType appear positioned incorrectly and clipped at the top in screen displays.
Â
This security update fixes the following nonsecurity issues:
-
After you run spelling check and then change the zoom setting on the View tab in Word 2016, Word 2016 may crash.
Â
-
When you run VBA code to request pages in a document in a hidden Word 2016 window, page collection fails to return pages, and the following error message is displayed:
Run-time error '5941':
Application-defined or object-defined error
Â
-
When you apply an outline level to text without a heading style, and save it as an .odt file in Word 2016, the outline level is lost. Additionally, the table of contents may not include an entry for such text after it is saved as an .odt file.
Â
-
Footnote numbers don't appear as superscript characters in printed Word documents and in PDF or XPS files (printed and on-screen). Superscript characters are positioned lower than expected.
-
Equations that are created in Equation 3.0 or MathType are positioned incorrectly, or text within these equations appears clipped at the top in printed documents and in PDF or XPS files (printed and on-screen).
Â
-
32-bit version of Outlook 2016 may freeze or crash on high-resolution or high-DPI devices. Some interfaces such as message content may not be displayed correctly. This update will fix most of these issues.
