Symptoms
Assume that you have an instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2016 installed and the database files are on a local disk. When I/O requests take longer than 15 seconds, then SQL Server may report the following three errors until server is restarted:
DateTime spid    SQL Server has encountered 1 occurrence(s) of I/O requests taking longer than 15 seconds to complete on file [File Path] in Database ID: Database ID.Â
Latch timeout
DateTime spid   A time-out occurred while waiting for buffer latch -- type 2, bp 00000051644A06C0, page 16:24731256, stat 0x40d, Database ID: Database ID
Checkpoint error:
DateTime spid    Error: 5901, Severity: 16, State: 1.DateTime spid    One or more recovery units belonging to database 'Database Name' failed to generate a checkpoint. This is typically caused by lack of system resources such as disk or memory, or in some cases due to database corruption. Examine previous entries in the error log for more detailed information on this failure.
Resolution
This issue is fixed in the following cumulative update for SQL Server:
