Symptoms

Assume that your application initiates a cross-database transaction that updates multiple tables in different databases in a manner that requires communication with Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MSDTC). In this scenario, you receive an "Expired BLOB handle" error.

The reasons for MSTDC involvement include the following:

  • Updates occur through a Linked Server.

  • One or more databases become part of an Always On availability group (AG).

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

This issue is fixed in the following cumulative updates for SQL Server:
