Summary
This article describes an update to enable a Windows Embedded Compact 2013 instance to operate on top of Windows 10 IoT Core using the Windows CE App Container. This is enabled by building a Windows Embedded Compact 2013 image using specially designated BSPs. For systems that operate natively and do not use these new BSPs, no functional or behavior is impacted.
Additionally, this update will install all previously released updates for Windows Embedded Compact 2013.
Improvements and fixes
This update allows for creation of a Windows Embedded Compact 2013 image that can be included in a Windows 10 IoT Core system image to enable a Windows Embedded Compact 2013 OS instance and applications to run and interface with Window 10 IoT Core hardware and applications. The Windows CE App Container feature will release in a future Windows 10 IoT Core update.
To enable CE applications to run on modern hardware and support gradual migration to Windows 10, the Windows CE App Container technology takes advantage of a pico process in Windows 10 IoT Core. To use this pico process, only a few DLLs in Windows Embedded Compact 2013 have been updated to correctly interface with the pico layer.
The code path in these enlightened DLLs is only enabled when the Windows Embedded Compact image is built with specially designated BSPs for ARM32 or x86. To use this feature, the Window Embedded Compact image must be built by using OS Designer and selecting either the Windows CE App Container: x86 or Windows CE App Container: ARMv7 (ARM32) BSP option.
Important Users who do not take advantage of the Windows CE App Container technology can apply this update and use their existing BSP profile. Users will not encounter any behavior difference in their device or workload.
