This update has been replaced by the latest update for customer experience and diagnostic telemetry that was first released on June 2, 2015. To get the update, see 3080149 Update for customer experience and diagnostic telemetry.

Summary

This package introduces the Diagnostic and Telemetry service on existing devices. This package also supports applications that are subscribed to Visual Studio Application Insights. The content in this article was revised to more accurately reflect the functionality of the package and related Windows Service.

About the Diagnostic and Telemetry service

Helping the overall application experience

The Diagnostic and Telemetry service collects diagnostics information about functional issues on Windows systems that participate in the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP). CEIP reports don't contain contact information, such as your name, address, or telephone number. This means CEIP won't ask you to participate in surveys or to read junk email, and you won't be contacted in any other way.  Windows users can make changes to their Windows CEIP participation in the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program settings page by opening Control Panel and selecting Action Center > Change Action Center settings > Customer Experience Improvement Program settings.

Applications that have their own diagnostics and telemetry program such as Application Insights may depend on the service to transport the telemetry to Microsoft. Application users will be able to participate in these programs through the settings of the application.

Additional information

This update uses SSL (TCP Port 443) to download manifests and upload telemetry to Microsoft that uses the following DNS endpoints:

  • vortex-win.data.microsoft.com

  • settings-win.data.microsoft.com

This update contains the following two manifests that are used by the service when the user participates in the Windows CEIP program or telemetry programs that are specifically managed by an application such as applications that use Application Insights.

  • telemetry.ASM-WindowsDefault.json

  • utc.app.json

Note When an advanced user runs the System File Checker tool (sfc.exe) after installing this package, the two files that are listed above are unintentionally flagged as corrupted. There's no system effect or corruption when these files are flagged, and this issue will be fixed in a later service update.
