This article describes an issue in which Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) service crashes in Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, or Windows Server 2012. An update is available to fix this issue. Before you install this update, see the Prerequisites section.
Symptoms
When this issue occurs, you may experience the following problems:

Every functionality that uses the WMI interface would fail. For example, Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) uses the WMI interface to show the status of virtual machines (VMs) on a Hyper-V host. If the WMI service on that Hyper-V host crashes, VMM can't show the status of the VMs on that host.

All services that share the same service host process with the WMI service would also become unavailable. Therefore, you may experience other problems that are not related to WMI service itself.
How to get this update
Important If you install a language pack after you install this update, you must reinstall this update. Therefore, we recommend that you install any language packs that you need before you install this update. For more information, see Add language packs to Windows.

Prerequisites
To install this update, you should first install April 2014, update rollup for Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2 (2919355) in Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2.

To apply this update, you don't have to make any changes to the registry.
Restart requirement
You may have to restart the computer after you apply this update.
Update replacement information
This update doesn't replace a previously released update.
