Encryption is the process of converting data into a code to prevent unauthorized access. In Windows, this can be achieved using built-in tools that allow you to encrypt files and folders, ensuring that only individuals with the correct decryption key can access the contents.
Note
File encryption is not available in the Home edition of Windows.
To encrypt a file or folder:
- Right-click a file or folder and select
Properties - Select the Advanced...
- Select the Encrypt contents to secure data check box
- Select OK to close the window, select Apply, and then select OK
