Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 or Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security updates that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008 R2 update release.
Symptoms
Consider the following scenario:
-
You perform a full backup operation on a database in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 or in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2.
-
The backup operation is canceled after the initial security and location checks. For example, no space is available to create the backup file, or a user manually stops the backup.
In this scenario, a transaction log backup is created even though the backup process is incomplete.
Notes-
This issue does not occur if the database backup is canceled before the initial security and location checks. For example, this situation occurs if the specified backup location is inaccessible when the backup operation starts.
-
This issue also occurs in SQL Server 2005 and in SQL Server 2008 R2.
Cause
This issue occurs because the log sequence number (LSN) for the full backup is set before the backup operation is completed.
In SQL Server 2005, in SQL Server 2008, and in SQL Server 2008 R2, the LSN is set before the database backup is completed. Therefore, a log backup is created even though the database backup was canceled.Resolution
To resolve this issue, apply the following cumulative update package.
After you apply this update, the LSN is set after the database backup is created. If the database backup is canceled, the transaction log backup operation fails, and you receive the following error message:Msg 4214, Level 16, State 1, Line 2
BACKUP LOG cannot be performed because there is no current database backup. Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 2 BACKUP LOG is terminating abnormally.Cumulative update information
