Introduction
This article describes a General Distribution Release (GDR) update for Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1 (SP1) that adds compatibility support for Microsoft Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2012 and for the Team Foundation Service Preview. After you apply the GDR update, you can use Visual Studio 2008 SP1 to connect to a server that is running Team Foundation Server 2012 or the Team Foundation Service Preview.

After you apply the GDR update, the following compatibility scenarios are enabled or improved when a Visual Studio 2008 instance connects to a Team Foundation Server 2012 server:

User names in Version Control are now displayed as full names (Firstname Lastname) instead of as account names (domain\alias).

Version Control Property change types are now included in the pending changes and check-in history displays. These types are new in Team Foundation Server 2012.

Users can now use the new security management web interface.
This update also fixes an intermittent build error that occurs when a large number of build agents run against a Team Foundation Server 2012-based server. When this error occurs, the build fails, and you receive the following time-out error message:
Detailed Message: Team Foundation services are not available from server <’TFS Server Name’>.
Technical information (for administrator):
The operation has timed out
Additionally, a Microsoft SQL Server deadlock occurs on the server.
Update information
A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next hotfix that contains this hotfix.

Restart requirement
You must restart the computer after you install this update if the affected files are being used. We recommend that you close all Visual Studio-related components before you install the update.
