Symptoms
Consider the following scenario:

You install a driver that has a larger .inf file on a computer that is running Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012. For example, you install a Realtek Audio driver.

You try to install the Windows 8 Client and Windows Server 2012 General Availability Cumulative Update (KB 2756872)from Windows Update on the computer.

You click restart the computer when the installation is complete.
In this scenario, Windows Update stops at 13 percent during the "Configuring Windows Updates" step. After about 15 minutes, the system restarts automatically. Additionally, the updates is not installed and you receive the following error message:
Failure configuring Windows updates.
Cause
This issue occurs because the following registry key value is set during the installation:
Location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\
Name: LogLevel
Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 0

The MANIFEST files (.manifest) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012" section. MANIFEST files and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintain the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
