Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

In this scenario, Windows Update stops at 13 percent during the "Configuring Windows Updates" step. After about 15 minutes, the system restarts automatically. Additionally, the updates is not installed and you receive the following error message:

Failure configuring Windows updates.

Cause

This issue occurs because the following registry key value is set during the installation:

Location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\Name: LogLevelType: REG_DWORDValue: 0

To apply this update, you must be running Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012.

  • GDR service branches contain only those fixes that are widely released to address widespread, critical issues. LDR service branches contain updates in addition to widely released fixes.

  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012" section. MANIFEST files and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintain the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
