Applies ToWindows 7 Service Pack 1 Windows 7 Enterprise Windows 7 Home Basic Windows 7 Home Premium Windows 7 Professional Windows 7 Starter Windows 7 Ultimate Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Windows Server 2008 R2 for Itanium-Based Systems Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Windows Server 2008 R2 Web Edition

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You create a virtual private network (VPN) connection to an intranet on a client computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

  • You create the VPN by using a Connection Manager Administration Kit (CMAK) profile.

  • The VPN connection is based on Point-to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP).

  • CMAK performs a post-connect action. Specifically, CMAK downloads a .txt file that contains the VPN destination server list from an HTTP address.

In this scenario, the download operation fails and you receive an error message that resembles the following:

WinHttpOpen: error 87 [ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER]

When this issue occurs, the client computer does not receive an updated destination server list. Therefore, the client computer may try to connect to access points that no longer exist. This behavior causes the VPN service to become unavailable.
