Introduction

This article describes Update 4 for Windows Server Solutions Best Practices Analyzer (Windows Server Solutions BPA) 1.0. Update 4 includes new best practices, and it also resolves several issues.Windows Server Solutions BPA is a diagnostic tool that is built on the Microsoft Baseline Configuration Analyzer (MBCA) technology. Windows Server Solutions BPA scans a computer that is running one of the following operating systems, and then it compares the existing server settings to a predefined set of recommended best practices:

  • Windows Small Business Server 2011 (SBS) Standard

  • Windows Small Business Server 2011 (SBS) Essentials

  • Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials

  • Windows Multipoint Server 2011 Standard

  • Windows Multipoint Server 2011 Premium

Windows Server Solutions BPA performs the following tasks:

  • Collects information about a server

  • Determines whether the server settings comply with a set of best practices that we recommend

  • Provides a report of the scan results that identifies differences between the server settings and the recommended best practices

  • Identifies conditions that may cause problems with the server

  • Recommends solutions to potential problems

How to obtain this update

To obtain this update if you are running Windows SBS 2011 Standard, use one of the following methods:

  • By default, Microsoft Update points to the WSUS service in Windows SBS 2011 Standard. This update is displayed on the Update tab of the Admin Console. After you deploy this update, it is displayed as available for installation in Microsoft Update.

  • In Windows SBS 2011 Standard, this update can also be installed directly by using Microsoft Update. To do this, start Windows Update and select the Check online for updates from Windows Update option. Then, click the Get updates for other Microsoft products option, and complete the process to opt in to Microsoft Updates. Then, click Check for updates in Microsoft Update to obtain the update.

To obtain this update if you are running Windows SBS 2011 Essentials, Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials, or Windows Multipoint Server 2011, follow these steps:

  1. In Windows Update, click Click here for details next to Find out more about free software from Microsoft Update, and then follow the steps to obtain updates from Microsoft Update. If you have already opted in to Microsoft Updates, you can safely ignore this step.

  2. In Windows Update, click Check for updates.

Prerequisites

To apply this update, you must be running one of the following operating systems:

  • Windows SBS 2011 Standard

  • Windows SBS 2011 Essentials

  • Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials

  • Windows Multipoint Server 2011 Standard

  • Windows Multipoint Server 2011 Premium

Additionally, you must have Windows Server Solutions BPA 1.0 installed.

Registry information

To apply the update in this package, you do not have to make any changes to the registry.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this update.

Issues that are resolved in this update

Issue 1

When multiple network adapters exist in Windows SBS 2011 Essentials, Windows Server Solutions BPA does not retrieve the correct network adapter.

Issue 2

After you apply the resolution of the EWSMaxReqLength rule, you cannot delete an email message from Outlook Web Access.

Issue 3

The resolution of the Check-WebSvcAuth rule is incorrect.

Issue 4

If a certification subject name contains spaces, the Check-CertSubject and ConnectCert rules are triggered incorrectly.

Issue 5

Windows Server Solutions BPA 1.0 does not check for the latest update rollups for Windows SBS 2011 standard and for Windows SBS 2011 Essentials.

New rules that are added in this update

After you install this update, the following new rules are added to Windows Server Solutions BPA:

  • DefWebSiteExtendedThis rule checks whether the default website is extended correctly.

  • RemoteVDirAuthenticationThis rule checks whether Anonymous Authentication is disabled.

  • SelfUpdateVDirSSLThis rule checks whether the SSL protocol is enabled or whether Anonymous Authentication is disabled in the SelfUpdate virtual directory.
