Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • Network printers are installed on a print server that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

  • You connect to the server from a client computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

  • You run an application on the client computer that collects print job information by performing Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) queries.

  • The application uses the WMI ExecNotificationQuery method.

In this scenario, a memory leak may occur in the Spoolsv.exe process. This memory leak issue occurs on the client and server-side.Note This issue does not occur when the computers are in a domain environment.

Cause

This issue occurs because Win32spl.dll impersonates the OpenPrinter function but does not impersonate the ClosePrinter function. However, a printer handle that is allocated in the OpenPrinter function is deleted in the ClosePrinter function. Therefore, the ClosePrinter function fails, and a handle leak occurs.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, apply hotfix 2796647 on the client computer.
