Symptoms
Consider the following scenario:
-
You have a Linux virtual machine that runs on a Hyper-V host in Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 8, or Windows Server 2012.
-
You try to format a Linux file system (such as by using the mkfs command) that is larger than 2 terabytes (TB) in the virtual machine.
In this scenario, the format operation fails, and the file system is not usable.
Cause
This issue occurs because Hyper-V does not update the sense information correctly for the WRITE SAME SCSI command that is issued by the Linux virtual machine.
Resolution
To resolve this issue, install the update rollup that is dated November 2014 or December 2014.
Status
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
