This article describes update 4011597 for Microsoft Excel 2013 that was released on December 5, 2017. This update also applies to Office Home and Student 2013 RT. This update has a prerequisite.

Be aware that the update in the Microsoft Download Center applies to the Microsoft Installer (.msi)-based edition of Office 2013. It doesn't apply to the Office 2013 Click-to-Run editions, such as Microsoft Office 365 Home. (How to determine?)

Improvements and fixes

This update fixes the following issues:

  • The compiled stream of the VBA project in Excel is corrupted and causes Excel 2013 to crash. To work around this issue, install this update and then follow the steps in the Registry information section.

  • Assume that there's an IOfficeAntivirus scanner registered that includes Windows Defender as of Windows 10 Version 1709. In this situation, when you repair an Excel worksheet through the File Open dialog box, Excel 2013 may crash or receive an antivirus positive result incorrectly.

  • After you install the May 2, 2017, update for Excel 2013 (KB3191877), you may receive the following error message when you click the Enable Content button on the security-warning bar in Excel 2013:

Compile Error: Automation error. Fatal error

This update also improves the translation of the message for cells error checking in the Dutch version of Excel 2013.

Update information

Registry information

After you install this update, you can follow these steps to force a recompile of all VBA projects that are opened in Excel 2013.

Important
Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.

  1. Exit all Microsoft Office applications.

  2. Start Registry Editor:

    • In Windows 10, go to Start, enter regedit in the Search Windows box, and then select regedit.exe in the search results.

    • In Windows 7, click Start, type regedit in the Search programs and files text box, and then click regedit.exe in the search results.

    • In Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, move your mouse to the upper-right corner, click Search, type regedit in the search text box, and then click regedit.exe in the search results.

Note To start Registry Editor, you have to log on by using a user account that has administrator permissions.

  3. Locate and then select the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Excel\Options

  4. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.

  5. Type ForceVBALoadFromSource, and then press Enter.

  6. In the Details pane, right-click ForceVBALoadFromSource, and then click Modify.

  7. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.

Note Depends on the size of your VBA projects, you may experience performance issues when you use this option. Therefore, we recommend that you only use this option for security reason to mandate that all VBA solutions are recompiled.

  8. Exit Registry Editor.

Tip If you want to bypass the above manual steps, you can copy the following text to a file that has the .reg extension and then import it into the Registy:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Excel\Options]
"ForceVBALoadFromSource"=dword:00000001

Prerequisites
