Summary

This article (KB981836) provides a fix for a network connection problem in which the connection drops on Windows Server 2003-based Hyper-V virtual machines (VMs). This issue occurs when the VMs are running under a heavy load. For detailed information, see the “Symptoms,” “Cause,” and “Resolution” sections of this article.

To download the fix for this issue, click the View and request hotfix downloads link that is located on the upper-left of the screen.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You install the Hyper-V role on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2.

  • The computer hosts a virtual machine (VM) that is running Windows Server 2003.

  • The VM is running under a heavy load.

In this scenario, the network connection of the VM is lost and then resumes. The length of time in which there is no network connection may last from several seconds to several minutes.

When this connection problem occurs, one or both of the following events are logged in the System log on the VM:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: netvsc
Event Category: None
Event ID: 5
Date: <date>
Time: <time>
User: N/A
Computer: <computer name>
Description: The miniport '<network adapter name>' hung.

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: netvsc
Event Category: None
Event ID: 4
Date: <date>
Time: <time>
User: N/A
Computer: <computer name>
Description: The miniport '<network adapter name>' reset.

Resolution

This hotfix is also available at Microsoft Update Catalog.

After you install this hotfix on the Hyper-V server, you must update the integration components in the VM that is running Windows Server 2003. To do this, open the Virtual Machine Connection tool to connect to the VM in Hyper-V Manager, and then click Insert Integration Services Setup Disk on the Action menu.
