Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008 R2 fix release.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You use Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 to create a report server project.

  • You add a new data source to the project. The data source is connected to Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services.

  • You add a new dataset that is based on the data source in the project. Then, you open the Query Designer window to design a Multidimensional expression (MDX) query.

  • You add many query parameters for the MDX query. For example, you add more than 15 query parameters.

In this scenario, BIDS responds very slowly.

This issue occurs every time that you perform one of the following operations:

  • You click the Design Mode () toggle button on the toolbar in the Query Designer window to switch between design mode and query mode.

  • You click Save or Cancel in the Query Designer window.

  • You right-click the dataset in the Report Data pane and then click Query to open the Query Designer window again.

Note This issue also occurs in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services Report Builder 3.0.

Cause

This issue occurs because of some inefficient iterations of the query parameters in MDX Query Designer.
