Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 or Microsoft SQL Server 2008 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 R2 or SQL Server 2008 fix release.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Analysis Services (SSAS 2008 R2) or Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services (SSAS 2008).

  • You have a large dimension in a cube, and the key for the largest attribute in the dimension has a String data type.

  • The combined size of the following files is greater than 2 GB:

    • Key store file (.kstore)

    • String store file (.ksstore)

    • Key hash store file (.khstore)

  • You perform a full process of the dimension.

In this scenario, the dimension is not processed, and you receive the following error message:

Memory error: An internal memory request exceeded the memory quota for the current processing action.

Workaround

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods:

  • Use the Integer data type for the key, instead of the String data type. To do this, you can change the existing key to the Integer data type. Or, you can create a surrogate key column that has the Integer data type, and then use the surrogate key column as the key for the related attribute.

  • Split the rows into multiple dimension tables, and then break the original cube into smaller cubes. For example, split up a geography table, and then create cubes for each continent.
