If you want to see only the document without the distraction and clutter from other windows, you can use Apple full screen view. This will hide the menu bar and stretch the document window to full screen.

To enter full screen view, on the View menu, click Enter Full Screen.

To return to normal view, move the pointer to the top of the screen until the menu bar appears, and then on the View menu, click Exit Full Screen.
Alternatively, you can press Control-Command-F to toggle full screen view on and off.

Focus mode (Word only)
In Word for Mac you can also use Focus mode which really clears all of the user interface away so you can just work in your document. To enter Focus mode click View > Focus. To exit Focus mode just press Esc. For more information see Bring focus to the content in your document.
