Symptoms
Consider the following scenario:
-
You have a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
-
You install hotfix 2386184 on the computer to enable the skipassource flag of the netsh command.
-
You assign many IP addresses to a network adapter on the computer by using the netsh command together with the skipassource flag.
-
You update some IP settings for the network adapter in the Network and Sharing Center graphical user interface (GUI). For example, you edit the subnet mask of an IP address that has the skipassource flag set to true.
In this scenario, the skipassource flag of the IP address and of all IP addresses that are listed under that address in the GUI are cleared incorrectly.
Notes-
To list the IPv4 addresses that have the skipassource flag set to true, run the following command:
netsh int ipv4 show ipaddresses level=verbose For more information about hotfix 2386184, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:2386184 IP addresses are still registered on the DNS servers even if the IP addresses are not used for outgoing traffic on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2
-
After applying this hotfix, the Startup type of the DHCP client service will be Automatic. To avoid this, you might have to apply hotfix 2684965. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
2684965 Startup Type property in the DHCP Client service is changed to Automatic in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2
Cause
The issue occurs because the GUI does not recognize the skipassource flag, and the GUI uses an incorrect method to handle changes of IP settings. When IP settings are changed, the GUI deletes all the old IP addresses from the old list and then adds new IP addresses to the new list. Because the GUI does not know the skipassource flag, the GUI does not copy the flag when IP addresses are added to the list. Therefore, the skipassource flag is cleared.

Status
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
More Information
Because the GUI is unaware of the skipassource flag setting, this update makes it impossible to verify that an IP address that was edited still has the skipassource flag. Therefore, if you have multiple IP addresses on one network adapter and you edit one of them, the flags of the other IP addresses are not affected. However, the flag of the IP address that you edited still reverts to false. This behavior is by design.
