You cannot access a DFS share through a mapped network drive on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • In a Distributed File System (DFS) namespace, you have a client computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

  • On the client computer, you map a DFS share to a network drive.

  • You access the DFS share through the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path in Windows Explorer. Then, you try to access the DFS share through the mapped network drive in Windows Explorer.

In this scenario, you experience one of the following issues intermittently:

  • You cannot access the mapped network drive. Additionally, you receive an error message that resembles the following:

<drive>:\<share folder name> is not accessible. An unexpected network error occurred.

  • Windows Explorer redirects you to the root path of the client computer.

  • You find duplicated or multiple top-level folders in the DFS namespace.

Important Windows 7 hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 R2 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, hotfixes on the Hotfix Request page are listed under both operating systems. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.

  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Server 2008 R2 and for Windows 7" section. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.

Workaround

Workaround for Windows 7 and for Windows Server 2008 R2

To work around this issue, run the following command on the client computer:

dfsutil /pktflush

Notes

  • This command flushes the local partition knowledge table (PKT). This forces the client computer to obtain the referral list of the targets from the server again.

  • This method is a temporary workaround. You will experience this issue again if you repeat the steps that are described in the "Symptoms" section.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
