Quick tips: Get started with Chat - Microsoft Support
Start and name a group chat. A group chat includes multiple people in a conversation. Select New chat at the top of your list of chats and channels. Select the down arrow to the far right of To to show the Group name section. Type a group name. Type the names of the people you’d like to add in the To section. This starts a new conversation.

Chat lets you connect with others, stay up to date on projects, and express yourself, whether you're in the office, at home, or on the go with the Microsoft Teams app. In Teams, you'll see three types of chats: One-on-one chats: to connect with people individually. Group chats: to speak with a group of people at the same time.

You can start a chat with yourself in Teams. Compose your message just as you would in a regular one-on-one chat. Use your chat space for drafts, to send messages and files to yourself, or to get to know chat features a little better. You can drag your chat with yourself to the top of the Favorites section for easy reference.

The new chat and channels experience streamlines conversations by placing chat, teams and channels in one place. In the combined Chat view, conversations are organized into three sections: Favorites: your most important conversations from both your chats and channels. Chats: your recent chats, sorted by most recent activity.

Most Teams meetings include a chat where meeting participants can share info without disrupting the flow of the meeting. Note: If you don't see chat in your Teams meeting, contact your IT admin. View and send messages in a meeting chat before, during, and after a meeting.

Create a group chat in Microsoft Teams (free)
In Microsoft Teams (free), it’s easy to start a group chat with your contacts on Teams personal. You can also send a message to someone you haven't chatted with before—they'll be prompted to accept the invitation before joining the chat.
