Learn how to use the COUNTBLANK function in Excel to count the number of empty cells in a range. See syntax, arguments, example, and tips for avoiding errors.

COUNT: To count cells that contain numbers. COUNTBLANK: To count cells that are blank. COUNTIF: To count cells that meets a specified criteria. Tip: To enter more than one criterion, use the COUNTIFS function instead. Select the range of cells that you want, and then press RETURN.

Use the COUNTBLANK function function to return the number of blank cells in a contiguous range (cells are contiguous if they are all connected in an unbroken sequence).

Empty cells, logical values, text, or error values in the array or reference are not counted. If you want to count logical values, text, or error values, use the COUNTA function. If you want to count only numbers that meet certain criteria, use the COUNTIF function or the COUNTIFS function.

Blank and text values are ignored. A number, expression, cell reference, or text string that determines which cells will be counted. For example, you can use a number like 32, a comparison like ">32", a cell like B4, or a word like "apples".

Use the COUNTA function to count only cells in a range that contain values. When you count cells, sometimes you want to ignore any blank cells because only cells with values are meaningful to you. For example, you want to count the total number of salespeople who made a sale (column D).
