Symptoms
Assume that you use Microsoft SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008 R2 or SQL Server 2012 on a computer that has Windows 8.1 installed. When you use the @@version parameter and the xp_msver system stored procedure to find the operating system version information, incorrect information is returned.
Cause
The issue occurs because Windows 8.1 has deprecated GetVersion and GetVersion (Ex) APIs. These APIs do not return the correct operating system version number.
Resolution
After you apply this fix, SQL Server will receive the operating system information for @@version parameter from the registry. SQL Server will also correct the information in the xp_msversystem stored procedure.
