Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You partition a table into many partitions.

  • You distribute each partition to a different filegroup of a Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Service Pack 1 database.

  • You set one of the filegroups as read-only and then work online to try to rebuild the indexes on the partitions that are distributed to other filegroups,

In this scenario, you may receive an error message that resembles the following:

Msg 1924, Level 16, State 2, Line 82Filegroup 'Filegroup_name' is read-only.

Resolution

This problem was first fixed in the following cumulative update for SQL Server 2014:
