Symptoms

Assume that you manually move email messages to the Junk E-Mail folder from other folders in a Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 environment. Additionally, you have applied a retention policy to the Junk E-mail folder. In this situation, the Messaging Records Management (MRM) retention policy for the Junk E-Mail folder is not applied to the email messages.

Note By default, email messages that trigger the spam confidence level (SCL) or the phishing confidence level (PCL) are delivered to the Junk E-Mail folder, and then the retention policy is applied to the email messages.

Cause

This issue occurs because email messages that you manually moved to the Junk E-Mail folder are ignored when the Exchange server applies the retention policy tags.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, install the following update rollup:

2685289 Description of Update Rollup 3 for Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 2

Workaround

To work around this issue, manually remove the retention policy from the Junk E-Mail folder, and then manually reapply the retention policy to this folder.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
