Determining the version of Internet Explorer

To determine the version of Internet Explorer, click About Internet Explorer on the Help menu or press Alt + H and then press A.

If you cannot start Internet Explorer, follow these steps to determine your version:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run or click Start Search.
  2. Type or copy and paste the following command in the Open box, or the Start Search box, and then click OK:
    cmd /k reg query "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer" /v Version
  3. A Command Prompt window opens and displays the Internet Explorer version in a format that resembles the following:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer
Version REG_SZ 6.00.2900.2180
    The first number after REG_SZ is your Internet Explorer version. In this example, the version is Internet Explorer 6.
