Problems when more than one user accesses the same file through Terminal Services

SYMPTOMS

In a Windows 2000 Terminal Services environment, users who access the same file over the network or over mapped network drives may experience problems after the first user who opened the file closes it. These problems were documented in the following KB articles:

CAUSE

The Windows 2000 network redirector maintains the data structures per computer, and therefore if two users on the same terminal server access the same file over the network, they share the same data structures internally. When the first user closes the file, the redirector also closes the file for other users.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, submit a request to Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

Note The "Hotfix download available" form displays the languages for which the hotfix is available. If you do not see your language, it is because a hotfix is not available for that language.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

To use the new functionality of this fix and to use per user data structures, you must add the following registry entry on the terminal server.

Subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MRxSmb\Parameters

Type: REG_DWORD
Entry: MultiUserEnabled
Value: 1

This entry enables per-user data structures in the network redirector.

The new registry entry for Windows 2000 Terminal servers is the equivalent of the

MultipleUsersOnConnection

entry for Windows NT 4.0 Terminal servers.
