The Write Signature command in Disk Management writes a signature to all unsigned hard disks on a Windows 2000-based computer

SYMPTOMS

If you add an unsigned hard disk to a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 2000 and then start the Disk Management snap-in in Computer Management, the Write Signature and Upgrade Disk Wizard will start.

If you add two or more unsigned hard disks, cancel the Write Signature and Upgrade Disk Wizard when it appears, and then use the Write Signature command to write a signature to only one of the new unsigned hard disks, all the hard disks are signed. This problem occurs even if you have specified the hard disks that you want to sign.

To use the Write Signature command, right-click one of the unsigned hard disks, and then click Write Signature.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do not cancel the Write Signature and Upgrade Disk Wizard. With the wizard, you can select the hard disks that you do want to write a signature to and the hard disks that you do not want to write a signature to. Only the hard disks that you specify to write a signature to will be signed.
