Offline Address Book monitoring enhancements in Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1

This article describes the offline Address Book monitoring enhancements that are available in Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1).

In versions of Exchange that are earlier than Exchange 2003 SP1, the offline Address Book typically records successful informational events. Failed events are not logged. This behavior can make troubleshooting offline Address Book problems difficult.

The overall effect of the offline Address Book monitoring enhancements is to increase the usefulness of offline Address Book event logging. Exchange 2003 SP1 logging includes the following benefits:

• Records more events that show what failed.
• Adds additional information to every event that shows which offline Address Book collection failed and which address list was being processed at the time of the event.
• Does not record some of the less useful informational success events that were logged in versions of Exchange that are earlier than Exchange 2003 SP1.

Some examples of offline Address Book monitoring enhancements in Exchange 2003 SP1 include:

• Logging for most exceptions and errors that have a Directory Service identification.
• Logging for all generation errors when the diagnostic logging level is set to None.
• Logging for events that force a full offline Address Book download.
• Logging for exceptions that are returned to the offline Address Book subsystem by API programs such as file system errors, directory errors, public folder errors, memory errors, or template generation errors.
• Logging for error codes that are returned from API programs. These are recorded in the description section of the event in the application event log.
• Logging for common failures such as missing public folder replicas, out-of-disk-space conditions, empty address lists, added or removed parent distinguished names that force full offline Address Book downloads, and template issues.

Character mapping

If characters that are in the offline Address Book configuration object name or in the offline address list name cannot be mapped to the Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based server code page, these characters are replaced with a question mark (?) when the event is recorded. This behavior may occur with a character from another language that does not map to the installed code page on the Exchange computer. To resolve this behavior, use one of the following methods:

Method 1

Rename the offline Address Book or the offline address list by using characters that are supported by the code page that is installed on your Exchange computer. To do this, right-click the address object that you want in Exchange System Manager, and then click Rename.

Method 2

Move the offline address list to a Windows Server 2003-based computer that has the localized language version installed for the character that you are trying to view. To do this:

1. Start Exchange System Manager.
2. Locate Offline Address Lists, right-click the offline address list object that you want, and then click Properties.
3. Click Browse, and then locate the Exchange computer that you want.
4. Click OK, and then quit Exchange System Manager.
