SYMPTOMS

You may experience one of the following symptoms on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer:
  • The Lsass.exe process stops responding. Windows 2000 automatically restarts.
  • The Lsass.exe process uses 100 percent of the CPU resources.
Also, the following event message is logged in the System log of the Event Viewer:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: LsaSrv
Event Category: Devices
Event ID: 5000
Date: <date>
Time: <time>
User: N/A
Computer: <computer name>
Description:
The security package Negotiate generated an exception. The package is now disabled.
The exception information is the data.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

Restart requirement

You must restart the computer to reinitialize the Lsass.exe process after you apply this hotfix.
