FIX: An empty string is returned when data is retrieved from a varchar (max) column by using SQL Native Client in Visual C++ .NET 2003 SP1Article ID: 954885 - View products that this article applies to. SYMPTOMSYou create an application that uses the CDatabase object or the CRecordset object to call the GetFieldValue function in Microsoft Visual C++ .NET 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1). You use this application to retrieve data from a field by using SQL Native Client (SNAC)-ODBC-driver. The field is of the varchar (max) Microsoft SQL Server 2005 data type. When you run the application, an empty string is returned instead of the real value. Note The correct results are returned if the SQL ODBC driver is used. CAUSEThis problem occurs because the SNAC driver introduces a new data type that is not expected when the MFC 7.1 libraries are written. RESOLUTION A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix. If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.
