Misleading Error Message If Hard Disk Problem Is Found

If you run Winnt32.exe to install Windows 2000 and your computer does not shut down properly when you are prompted to reboot, Chkdsk.exe runs. If Chkdsk needs to make any changes, you need to reboot again. At this point, you may receive the following error message: This error message may be confusing because Setup has not really run yet. Setup then restarts and copies files to your hard disk again.

This behavior occurs if Chkdsk finds something on the hard disk that requires a reboot. Setup recognizes that a reboot is required, notifies you, and then aborts the setup process.

Next, text-mode Setup starts again and determines that another instance of text-mode Setup started to upgrade the installation but did not finish for an unknown reason. Because Setup did not finish last time, Setup cannot safely assume that all the files were copied successfully, so they are copied again before Setup proceeds.

This behavior is by design.
